Lady Comets strike early against Kosh

Friday, February 7, 2003

By jumping out to a big first period lead, the number three-seed Alton Lady Comets upset the Koshkonong Lady Bluejays, the number two-seed, Jan. 31 in the Big Springs Conference Tournament in Couch.

Tiffany Wiggs (20 points) got the Lady Comets on the board with a layup before Lori Prewett's back-to-back layups for the Lady Bluejays gave Koshkonong a 4-2 lead early.

This proved to be the last time the Lady Bluejays would hold the lead as Alton moved ahead in the first.

Back-to-back treys from Amber and Gracie Treptow started a huge 16-2 Lady Comet run that put the Lady Bluejays in a 17-8 hole at the end of one.

A layup with 40 seconds left in the period by Lady Bluejay Carol Humphries (10 points) stopped the Alton run.

Prewett (nine points) opened the second period with a trey for Kosh and Alena Weeks added a layup to narrow the Alton advantage to 17-13 with 7:15 left in the frame.

Alton responded with an 11-4 run capped off as Amber Treptow (10 points) hit a layup to extend the margin to 28-17, Lady Comets, at the half.

Amanda Hensley (eight points) rattled in a couple of jumpers for Kosh to start the third, but in a theme that would repeat itself over in the second half, every time the Lady Bluejays narrowed the gap, the Lady Comets would pull away.

Despite outscoring Koshkonong by only one point in the third, 15-14, the Lady Comets held a 43-31 lead after three.

The half court trapping defense the Lady Bluejays used in the second half slowed down the Lady Comets a bit, but Alton's big jump to open the game paid off in the last period.

Six straight Lady Bluejay points midway into the fourth pulled Koshkonong within six, at 45-39.

Just as quick as the gap closed for Kosh, Alton widened it back with a 10-2 run to pull ahead 55-41 with 2:43 left.

A layup by Alton's Karen Watson at the 2:16 mark finished off Koshkonong as the Lady Comets rounded out the 60-46 upset win.
