Bearkatz Taylor-made for Izard County Tourney title

Friday, February 7, 2003

The Melbourne Bearkatz are in quite a groove when it comes to in-season tournament victories.

With their 61-41 dismantling of the Calico Rock Pirates Feb. 1 in the finals of the Izard County Invitational Tournament in Mount Pleasant, the Bearkatz are three-for-three in tourney finals this season (Lyon College, North Arkansas College, Izard County).

Levi Taylor (23 points) proved to be too much in the paint for the Pirates to cope with as Melbourne (31-0) won the Izard County Invitational for the fifth straight year.

Calico Rock (15-13) came out inspired to start the game as the score was knotted at 12-all after the first period.

Andrew McFarland (21 points) and Taylor provided all of Melbourne's first period points.

Calico Rock claimed the lead midway into the second period as Scottie Sanders (25 points) hit the first of his four treys on the night to put the Pirates in front at 17-16.

The Pirate advantage was short lived as the Bearkatz fired off the last nine points of the period to lead 25-18 at the half.

This 9-0 run included four points from Chad Milligan, and Melbourne's first 3-ball of the game, courtesy of McFarland.

The game started to slip away from Calico Rock in the third as Cody Moser started an 8-0 run for Melbourne with his first trey of the game, and a 33-18 Bearkat lead.

By outscoring Calico Rock 24-9 in the third period, the Bearkatz held a commanding 49-26 lead to start the last period.

Sanders hit a pair of treys in the fourth, but the Melbourne lead was too large at that point as the Bearkatz went on to a 61-41 victory in the senior boys' division of the Izard County Tournament.
