Free eye screenings set at West Plains

Thursday, November 6, 2003

WEST PLAINS -- The Department of Social Services will hold a free eye screening clinic at West Plains Civic Center Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All residents in The South Missourian News' coverage area including Mammoth Spring are invited to participate in the screenings. The examinations will be conducted by the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics' Department of Ophthalmology with assistance from the DSS Prevention of Blindness Unit.

Persons attending the clinic will be screened for such visual disorders as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration, as well as malformation or malfunctions of the eye and other visual problems.

Those attending the clinic who are diagnosed with visual problems that require specific treatments and further examination will be referred to local eye specialists for follow-up treatment. Persons who meet Prevention of Blindness (POB) eligibility guidelines will be assisted by POB program staff with needed eye services.

An appointment may be scheduled for the free eye examinations by calling 417-256-7121.
