Thursday, January 9, 2003

The Thayer Lady Bobcats basketball team is off to a great start once again this season.

The Lady Bobcats have accumulated a record of nine wins and one loss, and are averaging 63 points per game, while allowing only 37.

The Lady Cats have played in two tournaments this year and took the championships of both; defeating Couch in the finals of the Van Buren Lady Dawg Classic 46-40, and Crocker in the Plato Holiday Tournament 62-33.

Megan Underwood, a junior point guard for Thayer, was named the MVP of the Plato Holiday Tournament. Underwood scored 92 points in the three tournament games and collected her 1,000th career point in a 79-33 rout of Niangua Dec. 27.

Kylee McAlmond of Thayer was named as a member of the All-Tournament team at Plato. McAlmond averaged 11 points and nine rebounds per game in the tournament.

Coach Steve Atkisson, in his 20th consectutive season as head coach of the Lady Cats, picked up his 300th career victory the same night Underwood scored her 1,000th career point.

Atkisson said that his team was playing great and seems to improve with each game.

"Sarah Caldwell is averaging seven points a game and is leading the team in assists," said Atkisson.

"Summer Jones is pulling down a lot of rebounds and is starting to score more. Jones had 10 points against Mammoth Spring," Atkisson noted.

"Sarah Prewitt, Valerie Dixon and Christa Cox are also making great contributions to the varsity squad. All in all, the team chemistry is great and the kids are having fun," he said.
