Redus shakes off slow start as Couch cruises

Thursday, January 9, 2003

Keeping Couch's April Redus in check is proving to be a difficult task.

The Lady Indians' junior guard is averaging over 24 points per game on the young season as her team is off to a 6-1 start.

The Williford Lady Indians, possessors of an explosive guard of their own in Andrea Housmann, kept Redus quiet until late in the second period before she caught fire and finished the game with 29 points.

Not to be outdone, Housmann also ended the game with 29, but it was not enough to stave off Couch as they rolled to a 81-57 victory on Williford's home court Jan. 3.

Williford held one lead in the game, at 3-0, as Sarah Johnson (12 points) opened the game with a 3-pointer.

All of Johnson's 12 points in the game came on shots beyond the arc.

Couch began the game in a full-court pressing defense that limited Williford's movement on offense.

Heather Samon's (25 points) 12 first period points gave Couch a comfortable 20-9 lead at the end of the first period.

Redus made her presence felt in the second period as she outscored Williford 12-2 late in the frame to boost Couch out to a 39-22 lead at halftime.

Williford tried to keep pace in the third as Housmann continued to hit from the perimeter, and Raven Wells (eight points) went to work in the paint.

A jumper by Samons at the 1:45 point of the third broke a 8-0 Williford run and extended the Couch lead to 53-37.

Samons ended the frame with a point-blank layup to make the advantage 15 points, 55-40.

The story was the same in the fourth as six straight points from Kim LaBahn (15 points) kept Williford off balance and Couch completed the 81-57 win.

In boys' action, the gameplan for Couch was evident from the start; run, run, and run.

This uptempo attack paved the way for a 76-50 Couch victory.

After a long 3-pointer by Williford's Austin Davis (23 points) started the game, Couch reeled off 20 unanswered points at break-neck pace to take a 20-3 lead.

A layup at the first period buzzer by Chad Brooks gave Couch a 22-9 lead at the end of one.

The pressure intensified in the second frame as a 3-pointer by Couch's Derrick Bennett (11 points) at the 3:12 point saw Williford doubled, 40-20.

Four points from Matt Deckard closed the period with Couch in control 52-21 at intermission.

With a 31-point lead, Couch opened the third period with five freshmen on the court as the starters got a break.

Williford took advantage of this by posting 20 unanswered points to narrow the gap to 11, 52-41.

This Williford run signaled the return to action of the Couch starters as Brad Orahood (21 points) used a steal and hoop to break the Williford spurt.

Couch scored the last eight points of the frame to lead 60-41 after three.

The Couch freshman squad saw more action in the last period as the game ended with Couch easily on top 76-50.
