The Highland Elks competition for the 31st Annual Elks Hoop Shoot, the national free throw shooting contest for youngster age 8 through 13, will be held at Highland Middle School on Jan. 11 at 9 a.m.
Over 3 million youngsters from throughout the country entered last year's competition for boys and girls in age categories 8-9; 10-11; and 12-13.
Each contestant has 25 shots at the hoop. The boy and girl in each age group with the best scores advance through four tiers of competition to qualify for the national finals at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, Ma.
Boys and Girls entering the Highland Elks contest are winners of contests held in 14 area schools that have been invited to compete in this year's Hoop Shoot Competition. Winners will compete against other contestants in the state event at Hot Springs Feb. 15.
The winners of the state competition will advance to the area competition held in Paris, Tenn.
Winners there will advance to the national competition held in Springfield.
Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National Hoop Shoot plaque, on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.
