Stolen golf equipment recovered

Thursday, May 9, 2002

A juvenile was arrested and charged with stealing over $10,000 in merchandise from the Horseshoe Bend MRID golf course maintenance shed May 2.

A golf cart valued at $5,700, a set of Ping golf clubs valued at $4,635, numerous plastic jugs, gas cans and 29 gallons of gasoline were among items missing during a burglary the night before.

Police Chief Fred Mitchell investigated the theft and while patrolling the area he observed a male putting gasoline into a van parked on Hawk Lane in the Mobile Home Estates. The male was pouring the gasoline from a white plastic jug fitting the description of the jugs taken during the burglary.

The vehicle door was open so the chief was able to see several jugs of gasoline inside.

Mitchell questioned the suspect and asked him where the gasoline came from. The suspect told him he purchased the gas in Batesville because prices were cheaper in that area, Mitchell said.

After further questioning the suspect confessed and told Mitchell where the other items could be found.

The golf clubs were discovered in a mobile home on Hawk Drive, but the golf cart was found hidden behind the number three green.

Mitchell said, "Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't."

The property was returned to MRID with no apparent damage.

The juvenile was transported to the Independence County Juvenile Facility in Batesville and is scheduled to appear in court in Melbourne May 6.
