Alta O. Whiteside Phipps, daughter of the late Hayes F. Whiteside and Nancy Emily Worel Whiteside, was born Nov. 18, 1913, in Oregon County, Missouri.

She died Dec. 17, 2004, at the home of her daughter in Thayer, Mo.

She was united in marriage in Aug. of 1929 to Lester Sloan and to this union two daughters were born. He preceded her in death March 23, 1935.

She was united in marriage Sept. 2, 1936 to James Tobias Phipps and to this union a daughter was born. He preceded her in death Feb. 28, 1992.

She was a Christian; was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother and grandma, an avid gardener and a musician remembered for her love of singing and playing the fiddle.

Survivors include three daughters -- Joycelee Vaughn and husband, Norman of Independence, Mo., Agnes Cantrell of Thayer, and Kathryn Russell and husband, Elmer, of Thayer; seven grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren and 24 step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; both husbands; a step-son, James Burel Phipps; a step-daughter, Mildred Madden; two bothers -- Mack and Waymon Whiteside; four sisters -- Bertha Wiggs, Clemmie whiteside, Berta Brazeal and Emma Mask; a step-grandchild; a step-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service was held Dec. 20 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer.

Burial was in the Walker Cemetery near Thayer.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer.
