Highland band students get fine tuning at summer camps

Highland band students were busy improving their skills this summer at camps across the state.

Five students attended the senior high session of Dixie Band Camp. Twenty-seven students attended Dixie Band Camp held at University of Central Arkansas in Conway. Senior high session students were Jennifer Shaw, Clayton Orr, Alix Meacham, Sylvan Luebken, and Amy VanSlyke, who was elected by the board of directors to serve as a student officer at next summer's camp. Students attending the middle-school session were: first band, Aaron Saunders; second band, Natalie Pickle, Jourdan Armour, Vivian Huynh, Shayna Martin; third band, Kelsey Renihan, Kristen Evans, Dusty Jones, Jim Miller; fourth band, Della Frame, Justin Moore, Courtney Turner, Christina Hussung; fifth band, Jessie Friend, Amber Pryor, Olivia Ochoa, Cody Tipton, Alex Myren; sixth band, Tara Taylor, Cole Wolverton, Dylan Evans; and seventh band, Forrest Carithers.

Dixie Band Camp is the oldest band camp in the South and this was the 67th year. Over 1,100 students attended camp this summer representing seven states. Students participated in band rehearsals, sectionals, jazz band, master classes, marching classes, instrumental ensembles, and recreational activities, including an evening outing to Wild River Country. Bands are featured in concert on the final day of camp.

The Highland Marching Rebels' new drum major, Jennifer Shaw, attended Arkansas State University Drum Major Camp in Jonesboro. She attended daily classes in conducting, marching and leadership, and nightly individual evaluations.

The senior high flag line attended the Frontline Auxiliary Camp held at William's Baptist College in Walnut Ridge. Students participated in classes learning basic flag fundamentals and routines and ending each day with an individual evaluation. The flag line was awarded an Outstanding Home Routine Trophy for the routine they prepared prior to coming to camp. They also received a Grand Champion Trophy for their final performance. Sunnie McCarty was awarded an Honor Roll medal, presented to the best overall students at the camp. Flag line members attending camp were Sunnie McCarty, Kelly Scarbrough, Cassie Wolverton, Alicia Dawson, Natalie Peterson, Jocelyn Eversol, Lily Tompkins and Sabre Humble. The flag line was sponsored in part for camp by FNBC, CenturyTel, and the Highland Band Boosters.
