Sherman Eugene Byrd, son of the late C. B. Byrd and Violet Lee Martin was born Aug. 9, 1943 in Paragould, Ark., and died Nov. 7, 2003, in Batesville, Ark. at the age of 60.
He was united in marriage Jan. 20, 1962, in Paragould, Ark., to Phyllis Alexander. He was united in marriage July 9, 1962, in Paragould, Ark., to Phyllis Alexander. He was united in marriage July 9, 1983 in Jonesboro, Ark. to Judith Dowland.
He was employed by General Motors in Lansing, Mich., retiring after 30 years of service and was facilitator for United Auto Workers Union Local 652. He was a member of United Pentecostal Church in Thayer, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Judith of the home in Williford, Ark.; four children, Stacy Bryd and wife Brijette of Eaton Rapids, Mich., Vicki Green and husband, Gary of Mount Pleasant, Mich., Clinton Byrd of Grady, Ark., and Jason Byrd of Remus, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; his mother and step-father, Violet and Sims Martin of Williford, Ark.; two sisters -- Brenda Irvin of Paragould, and Linda Ezell of Jonesboro; three half-brothers -- Bryan Byrd of St. Louis, Mo., David Byrd of Saint Charles, Mo., and Danny Byrd of St. Louis; one half-sister, Barbara Byrd of Missouri; three stepdaughters -- Erica Huberd of Alexander, Minn., Pascale Lancioni of Jenison, Mich., and Erin Worthly and husband, Don of Springfield, Mo.; And eight step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; his son, Sherman Eugene Byrd II; one brother, Johnny Moore, and his beloved dog, Duke.
Services were Nov. 10, 2003, at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with the Rev. Clarence Stanes officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
Pallbearers were Hershel Stepp, Darrell Cameron, Jim Crownover, Don Taylor, Frank Tillmen and Clay Risner.
Honorary pallbearer was Richard "Red" Ayers.
