The News and a whole lot more

Friday, July 16, 2004

Managing Editor

Welcome to The News.

The newspaper you are holding in your hands is the award-winning flagship of Areawide Media, headquartered in Salem. This issue is being mailed to every household in Sharp County as well as to regular subscribers in other counties.

The News includes news not only of Sharp County, but also of Fulton and Izard counties (and occasionally Oregon County, Mo., too). It's a great choice for Sharp County residents who have family, social, business or church connections in their neighboring counties to the west -- or who just want to keep up with the news of the region beyond the boundaries of Sharp County.

Its sister publication, the Villager Journal, provides focused coverage of Sharp County, especially the Quad Cities. Although there is some overlapping (since news events don't respect county lines), the coverage emphasis in The News is broader.

And The News has its own unique lineup of special features and columnists.

Reporter Chris Wulff provides coverage of Sharp County news, while reporter George Jared keeps readers abreast of news in Fulton and Izard counties.

Sports editor Terry Mullins keeps high school sports fans up to date on their favorite teams in the tri counties.

Popular, award-winning columnist Bret Burquest brings his insightful, original and sometimes zany perspective to readers of the opinion page with his column "Boldly Going Nowhere."

Nate Allen offers Arkansas Razorbacks fans a weekly look into the lives of athletes and coaches, as well as historical perspective on UA teams with his column "Hog Calls."

In an American tradition that has lasted generations, country correspondents from small communities throughout the tri counties record the social events from their neighborhoods.

History lovers enjoy the page "40 Years Ago." Included in each issue, the page is a reprint of the front page of the Salem Headlight, predecessor of The News, from four decades ago.

There's a whole lot more, as you will discover for yourself as you page through this issue. Maybe it's time you took out a subscription to The News. Even if you already subscribe to another newspaper, we guarantee you'll get news and features in The News that you can't find anywhere else.

As an added incentive, Areawide Media is offering a special rate to new subscribers. You can get six months (26 issues) of The News for just $12. That's complete news coverage of the tri counties along with all the extra features each week for about the price of a cup of coffee.
