Local students win big at fair

WEST PLAINS -- An estimated 40 student from nine area schools including Thayer and Koshkonong, submitted projects in the 2004 Regional Science and Technology Fair recently at Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU) in West Plains.

The fair was hosted by SMSU-WP Natural Sciences, Math and Technology Department and is designed to support and enhance science education in junior and senior high schools by serving as an avenue through which students can develop and participate in science projects.

Categories in which students could enter projects include: behavioral/social sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, environmental science, math and technology. Winners received a medallion and monetary awards of $100, $75 and $25 for first, second and third places in each category and age division.

Winners in the senior division of the behavioral sciences category were from Thayer High School. Aaron Henry took first place, Val Dixon second, and Sarah Caldwell third place.

Seth Walters from Koshkonong High School placed third in the senior division of the life science category and Maddy Jackson placed first in that category in the junior division.

The Bank of Thayer was one of the local businesses that provided funding for the fair.

Local teachers Lisa Jackson from Koshkonong School and Peggy Veath from Thayer School were two of the sponsoring teachers at the science and technology fair.
