OREGON COUNTY -- A felony assault charge has been amended to second degree murder in Howell County after a stabbing victim died.
The charges were amended Dec. 8 by Howell County prosecutors against Brett E. Cotham, 18, of Thayer.
The prosecutors say Cotham stabbed Robert E. Kolsut, 23, on the leg causing profuse bleeding.
Cotham has also been charged with armed criminal action. He is scheduled to be in Howell County Court later this month.
The incident took place in the early morning hours of Dec. 5 in the parking lot of Caldwell Electric on Highway 63 north of Thayer.
It is here, law enforcement officers say, the two were in an altercation resulting in the stabbing.
The victim was a 1998 graduate of Highland High School and was living in Thayer at the time of his death.
Kolsut was taken by private vehicle to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains where he died the following evening.
A memorial service for Kolsut was Dec. 9 at First Baptist Church in Cherokee Village. Pastor Larry White officiated at the service under the direction of the Bryan Funeral Home of Hoxie.
