John Grimes, 89, of Melbourne, Ark., died Dec. 11, 2003, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.

Born April 18, 1914, in LaCrosse, Ark., he was the son of Charles and Elizabeth Ramsey Grimes. He was a retired minister, a farmer, a member and former pastor of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Eathel Grimes of the Sharp Nursing Home in Sidney; a son, John Grimes of Monroe, Iowa; two daughters -- Freda Smith of Hardy and Newton, Iowa, and Jane Wright of Evening Shade; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers -- Luther Grimes, Hayden Grimes and an infant Harrison Grimes; and a great-grandson, Jeremy Smith.

The funeral was Dec. 15 at Zion Hill Baptist Church with Larry Strope officiating. Burial followed in Roberts Cemetery near Franklin with arrangements under the direction of Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.

Pallbearers were Ervin Ray Dover, Brandon Johnson, Clay Campbell, Rayburn Finley, Stanley Yancey and Henry Lankford Jr.

Honorary pallbearers were Jack Cliff and Jerry Blankenship.
