Thayer family heads to Africa for mission work

Thursday, November 13, 2003

THAYER -- Thayer Garden Club learned at its October meeting that soon a member and her family will be leaving the club.

Garden Club member Shannon Jensen announced during the meeting that she and her family would be traveling to Angola, Africa, to serve as missionaries.

Shannon and Helmer Jensen took a missionary tour two and a half years ago to Arizona. This is where Shannon said God spoke to her and the area of foreign missions stood out for her. Angola is about twice the size of the Texas Coastal Plain. The family will work under the direction of the Southern Baptist International Mission Board.

Helmer Jensen was present at the October garden club meeting when his wife, using a large world map, gave a report on where the family would be and what their life there would be like.

The Jensens will go to Virginia in January. After six weeks they will travel to Portugal where they will spend eight to 12 months learning the Portuguese language.

The mission board will supply crates for their belongings to be shipped in. They will be on salary and will live in a furnished apartment.

In Angola their compound will be within 10-foot walls. There are armed guards within the area and adequate medical facilities.

The couple explained they would have to be indoors by 6:30 p.m. to escape mosquitoes which spread malaria. Mrs. Jensen said the family will have to use caution because land mines still pose a threat in the country. She said she home schools their children so schooling will not be a problem.

Garden club members said they wished the family a successful and satisfying experience in their chosen life work.

Viola Scallions, a guest of the club, became a garden club member. Kim Boddie was the hostess for the club when they met last month. Assisting the hostess were Allison Boddie and Keri Boddie.
