Lela Virginia Newman, daughter of the late B.L. Clark and Ora Margaret Crass Clark, was born May 12, 1912, in Myrtle, Mo. and died Dec. 23, 2003, in Thayer at the age of 91 years.
She was united in marriage to Charley Buckley who preceded her in death.
She was later married to Gayford Newman who also preceded her in death.
She was a seamstress, working in a garment factory in Springfield, Mo., during World War II and was employed by the sewing factory in Thayer for 30 years.
She was a loving mother, grandmother and a friend to all. She was a great cook and was famous for her chicken and dumplings.
She was a member of Bryd Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Lee Essary and husband, Bert, of Springfield; a son, Marc Newman of Alton; a brother, Frank Clark of Granite City, Ill; one sister, Neva Martin and husband, Lewis, of Thayer; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was Dec. 27 at Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer , Mo., with the Rev. Joe Garrison officiating. Burial was in Myrtle Cemetery at Myrtle, Mo., with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc. of Thayer.
Pallbearers were Jerry Martin, Eddie Newman, Shane Newman, Jeffery Collins, Ernie Newman and James Martin.
