Sidney Boyd Lank-ford, 79, of Hardy, died Dec. 31, 2003, at his home.

He was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Tishimingo, Okla.

He retired in El Paso, Texas, as a chief warrant officer (CW4) from the U.S. Army after more than 28 years including service as a paratrooper and a mechanic in the 101st Airborne Division in World War II in Japan and in the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of Hardy United Methodist Church having served as a trustee and chairman of the finance committee.

He was a 32nd degree Mason and past master of both Sunland Lodge 1344 in El Paso and Wilson Lodge 432 in Hardy.

He was a past president of the Spring River Optimist Club. He was a volunteer fireman and a member of the American Red Cross Disaster Response Services team on the local, national and international levels, working especially in Arkansas, Louisiana and Guam.

He was a strong supporter of the Hardy Food Room and Heifer Project International as well as an active Shriner.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years Jewell "Judy" Lankford, of Hardy; one daughter and son-in-law -- Barbara and Joe Giudice of Hudson, Fla.; four grandchildren -- Kim Stephens of Virginia, Kenny Giudice of West Virginia, Kevin Giudice and Keith Giudice both of Florida; and seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, and two sisters.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 2, 2004, at Hardy First United Methodist Church with Floyd Rikard, Johnny Carter and Tom Rhoades officiating.

Burial was with full military honors in the columbarium of the National Cemetery in the Little Rock.

Local arrangements were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home, Oak Hill Chapel of Hardy, Ark.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastern Ozarks Hospice, Cherokee Village, Ark.
