Lawrence Swetnam, 89, of Ash Flat, Ark., died Sept. 2, 2003, at Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village. Born Jan. 9, 1914, near Williford, he was the son of Oscar Benjamin Swetnam and Mary Belle Hill Swetnam. He grew up and attended school in the Little Barn community, then went school in Hardy where he finished his education. He married Bernice Marie Clayatt Dec. 29, 1946, in Childress, Ark.
He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp having served during World War II. He worked many years as a self-employed businessman in the Hardy Area. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Marie Swetnam of the home; a son and his wife, Larry and Virginia Swetnam of Highland; two granddaughters -- Lori McClure of Batesville, and LaGina Austin of Salem, Mass.; and a great-granddaughter, Mallory McClure of Batesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Bela Kay Swetnam; eight brothers -- Asa, Andrew, Ray, Floyd, Babe, Jim, N.O., Gordon, and Huberto Swetnam; and three sisters -- Iva Groves, Silva Young and Rena Swetnam.
The funeral was Sept. 5 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel with Floyd Rikard and O.C. Wright officiating Burial was in the Baker Cemetery near Ozark Acres with arrangements under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel of Highland.
Pallbearers were Jim McKinney, Wilson Hall, Alan Brogdon, Joe Hobbs Jr., Jimmy Johnson and Marty Goodwin.
Honorary pallbearers were Cowan English, Ellis Hill, Al Downum, Bill Lowe, Charlie Sanders and Sherman Ables.
