Wreck kills two north of Thayer

Thursday, May 22, 2003

THAYER -- A Thayer High School senior died in a head-on collision May 16, the day before she would have graduated.

Emily Beck was 18 years old.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol Troop G report, a 1981 Oldsmobile driven by Scott Reed, 33, of Thayer crossed the center line and hit a 2001 Ford driven Beck.

Reed was also killed in the accident.

The accident occurred on the Highway 63 one mile north of Thayer and backed up traffic on both the north and south sides of the roadway for almost one mile.

Trooper Michael Hargus and Sgt. Dave Finley investigated the accident. They reported Beck was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, but Reed was not.

A memorial service for Beck was held May 19 at Thayer High School.

She was a staff member of The Peptonian, Thayer High School's newspaper. She planned to attend Southwestern Missouri State Univeristy in West Plains this fall.

Beck's father, Jeff Beck, received her diploma at Thayer's graduation exercises May 17.
