A Salem man perished in a car fire May 16 on Highway 395 North when he was involved in a head-on collision.
Steve D. Throckmorton, 46, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1995 Nissan Altima struck a northbound Nissan four-wheel-drive pickup truck driven by Ronnie Vaughn, 41, of Salem, according to Cpl. K. Foley of the Arkansas State Police.
Vaughn was flown to St. John's Regional Health Center in Springfield, Mo., Foley said. He was listed in fair condition Tuesday.
Salem Police Chief Albert Roork, who was the first to arrive on the scene, said Vaughn received head injuries, knee injuries and a collapsed lung.
Throckmorton's vehicle was fully engulfed in flames, said Roork. Within minutes of Roork's arrival, the Salem Fire Department arrived.
Roork said after the blaze was extinguished firemen used the Jaws of Life to extricate Throckmorton. He said the victim was pinned in, and it took a lot of effort from firemen to remove his body.
