KOSHKONONG -- A school board position is currently open on the Koshkonong School Board due to the resignation of one of the school board members.According to Koshkonong Superintendent James McLeod, the Rev. David Meade resigned at the May 13 school board meeting. Meade said the reason for the action was because he had taken a position with a church in Houston, Mo., and he would be moving.McLeod said the vacant position would be for the remainder of this year and up to the next regular school board election in April 2003.Anyone eligible and interested in this board position should address a letter indicating so to the Oregon-Howell R-III Board of Education Secretary Darlene Crews, P.O. Box 398, Koshkonong, MO, 65692. The letter should include any qualifications the possible candidates have for the position.Oregon County Clerk Gary Hensley, who serves as the chief election official for the county, said the position will be determined by a vote of the remaining school board members. The position will be voted on in the spring 2003 municipal and school board election."Qualifications for a board member are that they are a citizen of the United States and a resident taxpayer of Oregon-Howell R-III School District. They have to have resided in the state for one year preceding their appointment, and school board members are required by law to be at least 24 years old," the superintendent said. He added that all board members should have a knowledge of and an interest in the welfare and educational opportunities of students.The superintendent said all school board members initially elected or appointed after Aug. 28, 1993, in addition to the other qualifications, are required by law to successfully complete orientation and training requirements within one year of the date of the election or appointment. He said the orientation and training will consist of at least 16 hours, with the cost of the training paid by the school district.
