Donald L. "Don" Merdian, 74, of Horseshoe Bend died Aug. 8, 2005, at his home.
Merdian was born on May 28, 1931, in Henry, Ill., the son of John and Anna (Holler) Merdian. He was united in marriage to Lois More on Oct. 10, 1955, in Chicago, Ill. Merdian served in the United States Army in the Signal Corps during the Korean War. He worked in river transportation for almost 40 years. He started work as a deckhand and worked his way up to the Pilot House as a captain. He ultimately retired as the president of the company.
He moved with his wife, Lois, to Horseshoe Bend 14 years ago from Greenville, Miss. He was a former board member of the Horseshoe Bend Library and was a member of the Turkey Mountain Men's Golf Association in Horseshoe Bend. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was a member of St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bend.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; one daughter, Diane Merdian of San Francisco, Calif.; two sons and their wives, Stuart and Sharon Merdian of Pleasant Hill, Mo., and Bob and Gretchen Merdian of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Gordon Merdian of Peoria, Ill., and Melvin Merdian of Chillicothe, Ill.; one sister, Jo Ann Wibbelsman of High Point, N. C.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Kenneth Merdian; and one sister, Ann McMaster.
A memorial mass was held Aug. 12 at the St. Mary of the Mount Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bend with Father Venatius Preske officiating. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery in Henry, Ill., at his family plot at a later date.
