Charleston loaded for Bear in Jessieville

Wednesday, March 6, 2002

The Mammoth Spring Bears hit the State Tournament at Jessieville Feb. 27 and had a hard time against powerhouse Charleston.

A drought in the first quarter put the Bears in a bad situation, spotting Charleston a 20-0 lead.

The Bears woke up in the second with a Matt Newman trey. Seth Wooldridge hit the jumper in the lane and a layup, and then Seth Risner canned a trey from the right corner.

Charleston matched the Bears with 5 quick points, but Derek Todd hit a trey from the top of the key to keep the Bears heading in the right direction, with Charleston only managing a deuce to answer. Back-to- back buckets by Adam Baldridge and Wooldridge got the Bears back to within 14 points.

Charleston put the pressure back on Mammoth Spring with 6 unanswered points, taking a 20- point lead once again.Wesley Whiteside hit a turnaround jumper off the right baseline to end the first half.

Todd opened the third with two points off the loose ball, but Charleston answered to keep pace. Risner hit a trey from the right wing and Todd hit one from the left wing to get the Bears back to within 12 points at 27-39, but 4 quick points by Charleston put the pressure back on Mammoth Spring.

Newman drained a trey from the right wing to cut the deficit back to a baker's dozen, but Charleston ripped off eight unanswered points to take a 21- point lead toward the end of the third quarter. Brett Greene hit one of two free throws after getting hacked on the turnaround jumper off the left baseline, setting the score of 31-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Charleston took advantage of the Bears in the fourth, as Mammoth Spring was forced to go up-tempo in trying to play catchup, and Charleston ripped off the first 6 points of the quarter.

Newman ended their run with a couple of free throws, but a 10-0 run for Charleston set the tone for the remainder of the game. Brandon Myers hit the lone field goal for Mammoth Spring at the 1:06 mark in the fourth, a 3-pointer from the left corner, but it was too little too late, as Charleston took a 69-36 win, ending the Bears' season.

For the Bears: Matt Newman had 8 points, Derek Todd finished with 8 points, Seth Risner ended with 6 points and 2 steals, Seth Wooldridge had 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 assists.
