THAYER -- The Tek Shop, a full-service Internet access provider and computer sales and service center, opened in the Country Mart Center in Thayer in February. Owners Jim and Kim Hart celebrated their ribbon cutting with other members of the Thayer Chamber of Commerce Feb. 27.
According to Jennifer McCullough, the Tek Shop brings high-speed wireless Internet technology to the Thayer, Koshkonong and Mammoth Spring areas. She said through the use of cutting edge broadband technology Jim Hart has made it possible for businesses and individuals in these areas to log on to the World Wide Web without using traditional phone line connections.
This new broadband technology is revolutionizing the way people think about the Internet," Hart said. "With wireless connection, Web pages download much, much faster than with traditional dial-up service. The idea of having to wait for a wireless Web site to appear on screen is fast becoming a thing of the past."
Businesses and individuals who need a reliable Internet connection for sending e-mail, downloading files and transferring data can count on the constant connection wireless service provides. With dial-up services, users often have difficulty achieving and maintaining a connection, but with wireless technology this rarely happens, according to Hart.
In addition to high-speed wireless Internet access, the Tek Shop also offers dial-up access at very affordable rates. Hart's more than 20 years of experience in the computer industry enabled him to design a high-tech dial-up system that offers faster connection, faster download times and more reliable e-mail service than traditional dial-up providers, said McCullough.
"Our dial-up service can accommodate most everyone's needs for Internet access, but for those who really need the best technology has to offer, our high-speed wireless Internet access is the way to go," Hart said.
The Tek Shop also specializes in computer accessories such as printers, back-up systems, power supplies, cables and components.
Hart said he plans to expand his Internet access service to surrounding areas including Alton and West Plains within the next several month. "The response we've had from the community so far is outstanding. I think as more people begin to use the Internet as a means of communication both in businesses and for personal use, it will eventually become as much of a necessity as the telephone."
