Archie Earl Allen, son of the late William Shelton Allen and Nettie Leona Williams Allen was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Koshkonong, Mo., and died Nov. 18, 2003, at his home in Thayer, Mo., at the age of 84.
He was married in Salem, Ark., on Oct. 8, 1946, to Helen Stith. Archie, who was known as "Earl" by his friends in the Koshkonong area, was an avid quail hunter and loved to play the piano.
Over the years, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with his family and he covered many miles with his wife after he retired. He enjoyed spending time with his family, telling stories, singing and playing pool, and fishing and working on the family farm. He openly expressed his appreciation for his country and his relationship with God.
He was a World War II veteran, enlisting in the Army Air Force May 16, 1941, in Los Angeles, Calif. He served in the Mediterranean Theater from August, 1942, to February, 1945, as an aerial engineer on C-47 airplanes. He re-enlisted August, 1948 with the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command as an aerial engineer on B-17 airplanes, serving in the Japanese Occupation. He was a member of the American Legion Charles Burkett Post 344 in Thayer for 44 years.
He was a member of Langston-Vincent-Lunn VFW Post 7831 in Mammoth Spring, Ark., and was a retired engineer for Frisco Railroad. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of the home in Thayer; four sons -- Dane Allen and his wife, Pat of Nixa, Mo., Lark Allen of Columbia, S.C., Harvey Allen and his wife, Marcia, of Thayer, and Mike Allen and his wife, Sharlet of Thayer; two daughters -- Dian Hensley of Nixa, Mo., and Lana Armstrong and her husband, Ernie, of Mammoth Spring; nine grandchildren -- Eric Allen, Matthew Allen, Aaron Hensley, Andrew Hensley, Bradley Armstrong, Beverly Bailey, Nickolas Allen, Jordan Reed, and Mikayla Allen; seven great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Robert Peran and Steve Peran of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mavis Peran; and one granddaughter, Karmon Hensley.
Services were Nov. 21 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Ted Clarke officiating. Burial was in Koshkonong Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home Inc., of Thayer, Mo.
Missouri Military Rites were presented by the West Plains Veterans Honor guard.
Pallbearers were Eric Allen, Aaron Hensley, Nickolas Allen, Mathew Allen, Andrew Hensley, Bradley Armstrong, Sean Bailey and Jordan Reed.
