Grizzly basketball clinic set

Thursday, September 19, 2002

Area basketball coaches will have an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season Oct. 6 when Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains (SMSU-WP) hosts its first ever Grizzly Basketball Coaching Clinic at the West Plains Civic Center.

The one-day clinic will feature guest speakers who will give coaches tips on a variety of subjects, according to SMSU-WP Grizzly Coach Tom Barr.

The featured speaker for the event will be Cindy Stein, head coach of the University of Missouri-Columbia Lady Tigers basketball team. Barr said Stein will discuss special situations.

Other speakers include Steve Shepherd, head coach of the College of the Ozarks men's basketball team, who will discuss motion offense with breakdown drills, and Barr, who will discuss offensive practice drills and defensive and rebounding practice drills. Members of the Grizzly basketball team will be on hand for on-court demonstration of the skills discussed, Barr said.

The event gets underway at 1 p.m. with Stein's presentation and concludes at 6:15 p.m. Complimentary pizza from Domino's Pizza and drinks from Pepsi will be served, Barr said. Door prizes will also be given away.

The fee for the event is $35 per coach before Oct. 3. Coaches who do not preregister by that date will be charged $40 at the door the day of the event.
