OREGON COUNTY -- Senior citizens in Oregon County age 60 or older who meet income guidelines may now fill out an application to receive, free of charge, coupons that can be used at farmers' markets.According to Oregon County Health Department Women's, Infants', Children's (WIC) Director Sharon Wrenfrow, this is the first year for the program and Oregon County is among only nine counties in the state where the program is being offered.Wrenfrow said seniors in the county must have an annual income at or below the federal poverty guidelines: $16,391 for an individual or $22,089 for a household of two. She said participation may still be allowed for people with higher incomes if there are additional people in the household supported by the seniors' income, such as grandchildren. She said each eligible applicant will receive 12 Seniors Farmers' Market Nutritional Program (SFMNP) coupons worth $3 each for a total of $36. Wrenfrow said married residents eligible for the program will need to fill out two applications. Farmers' Markets in the county are located at the following places: Thayer Wal-Mart and Alton Dollar Store -- Monday through Friday, Thayer Health Department -- the second Monday, Wednesday and Thursday of each month, and Alton Health Department -- the first Monday and Tuesday of each month and the second Friday of each month.Applications for the SFMNP coupons are now available at Oregon County Health Department offices in Thayer, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Alton office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wrenfrow said married residents eligible for the program will need to fill out two applications. The program is sponsored statewide by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The program will last through October in all counties in Missouri.
