Although they didn't sink a field goal in the final period of play, the Izard Consolidated Cougars did can 16 of 20 free throws in the fourth en route to a 52-46 win over the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds in the first round of the NEA Tournament's A-AA brackets Dec. 21.
The Cougars had beaten their conference rivals from Sloan-Hendrix earlier in the season by a similar score of 52-49.
In their NEA tilt, the Cougs fell behind 16-11 after one, but bounced back to grab a 23-21 lead at the half. ICC held a 36-34 lead going into the last period thanks to a 3-ball from Justin Burns (13 points) late in the third.
Jesse Dockins (12 points, seven assists) stepped to the charity stripe eight times in the fourth period and nailed them all to help the Cougars win the contest.
Jason Sherrell erupted for a game-high 25 points, coupled with 10 boards, to lead ICC.-- Terry Mullins
