With the 2005 Izard County Invitational Tournament taking place on their home court, the ICC Lady Cougars made sure they started the event off on a positive note Jan. 22 with a 61-40 defeat of the Mount Pleasant Lady Bluebirds in senior girls' play.
The second-seeded Lady Cougars were never threatened, jumping out to a 20-7 lead after the first period of play behind a pair of triples from Brittney Richardson. Richardson posted a team-high 15 points for ICC.
Ashley Smith (nine points) rang up a triple for Mount Pleasant, the number seven seed, in the second frame, but the Lady Bluebirds could manage only seven points in the stanza, and fell behind 41-14 at intermission.
With a 51-28 lead after the third period, ICC hit cruise control and finished the afternoon with a 21-point victory over Mount Pleasant.
Christine Kodrich added 13 points for the Lady Cougars, while Brittney Bailey followed with 11. Sammi Fowler logged five, with Chelsie Yancey, Courtney Blevins, Lauren Cunningham and Shelia Debow scoring four points apiece for ICC.
Tara Bray paced the Lady Bluebirds with a game-high 19. Morgan Stegeman added seven, and Lacey Rush five for Mount Pleasant.
The Cougars defended their Den against a Bearkat attack Jan. 21, as they knocked off their county rivals from Melbourne 66-35 in 2AA-North action.
The Cougars (19-8, 8-3) led 20-12 after one and 38-22 at the half.
A pair of double-double performers paved the way to victory for ICC.
Jason Sherrell exploded for a game-high 29 points and 14 boards, while running mate Jesse Dockins added 13 points and handed out 11 assists.
Jesse Jenkins paced the Bearkatz with 21 points.
In girls' action, the Lady Cougars (19-6, 9-2) opened the night with a 63-36 win over the Lady Bearkatz.
ICC shook loose in the third period, going on a 20-8 run to put the game on ice.
Fowler tallied 17 points and nine rebounds for the Lady Cougars, while Richardson followed with 16 points and six rebounds.
Brittni Washington scored a team-high 13 points for Melbourne.
Placing four players in double figures, ICC posted a 53-44 win over Sloan-Hendrix at Imboden in 2AA-North play.
The Greyhounds held the lead for the biggest part of the game, including 27-22 at the half, and 34-32 after three, before the Cougars took control late.
Justin Burns paced ICC with 14 points, while James Morgan tossed in 13, Dockins 12, and Sherrell 10.
In girls' play, the Lady Cougars began the night with a tight 49-46 victory over the Lady Greyhounds.
Down 23-18 at intermission, the Lady Cougars rallied to lock the game at 37-all at the end of three, before edging ahead for good in the final period.
Richardson led ICC with 19 points, and Cunningham added 11.
