The Thayer Lady Bobcats basketball team competed in the Licking Wildcat Summer Shootout in Houston June 7 and 8.
The Shootout attracted teams from four states, as it is one of the biggest team camps in the Midwest. The camp is held in 12 gyms from Cabool to Salem.
The Lady Cats rolled to a 5-0 record, defeating teams from Trenton, Fatima, Houston and Springfield Catholic.
The first round of the tournament found Thayer in a tough matchup with 2002 Missouri State Final Four team Poplar Bluff, a AAAAA team. Thayer raced out to a 10-point lead early in the contest, but were unable to handle the extreme size of the Lady Mules. The final score was 38-32 in favor of Poplar Bluff.
Aug. 2 and 3 found Coach Atkisson's ladies playing in the 53-team Licking/Rolla Shootout at the University of Missouri at Rolla campus. The Lady Cats played nine games in 36 hours with the heat index around 105 degrees.
The Lady Cats again got off to a good start defeating Licking, Conway, Greenville and Timberline.
In action from the last day of the tournament, the Lady Cats advanced to the finals of the 19-team Division II bracket, defeating state powerhouse Jefferson City along the way.
The championship game found Thayer and the Buffalo Lady Bison squaring off. The lead changed back-and-forth throughout the game with the score tied at 35-all with five seconds left on the clock.
Buffalo missed a 15-footer but had a rebounder in position for a putback at the buzzer to give the Lady Bison the 37-35 win. Thayer finished with a 6-3 record. The JV squad compiled a 5-3 mark.
The upcoming season will find the Lady Cats competing in a tournament just added to their schedule, the Plato Christmas Tournament.
Thayer junior Sarah Caldwell attended the SMSU Elite Camp for advanced players in July and brought home a third place award in the freethrow contest. Caldwell and freshman Lashonda Horton attended the SMSU Grizzly Competition Camp in West Plains this summer and won numerous awards.
Juniors Megan Underwood and Sarah Prewitt and sophomore Valerie Dixon attended the University of Missouri Elite Camp in Columbia.
Underwood and junior Summer Jones then headed south to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Lady Backs Elite Camp.
