Velma Ary West, 93, was born in Arytown, Mo. on Feb. 27, 1909, and passed away Aug. 28, 2002. She was one of eight children and lived in Arytown throughout her childhood. She attended the University of Oklahoma where she met and married Thomas S. West. They became the parents of three sons, Thomas S. West Jr., Louis C. West, and Jerry A. West. The family lived in Three Rivers, Texas before moving to San Antonio in the 1940s. She was an avid gardener, homemaker, and volunteer. Velma was very involved in numerous organizations. She and her husband were founding members of the San Antonio Rose Society. She served as president of the Easter Seals Society and spent many tireless hours helping with the Easter Seals Children's Clinic in San Antonio. She and her husband, Thomas, also served on the board of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and were instrumental in raising thousands of dollars in the San Antonio area for Muscular Dystrophy. Survivors are her sons, Thomas S. West Jr., of San Antonio, Louis C. West and wife, Johnney Ruth West of Boerne; four granddaughters, Jeanette West Hannasch of Seguin, Kathy Ann West of San Antonio, Terri Sue West Perkins and husband, Steve Perkins of Plano, and Tiffany Starr West of San Antonio; one great-granddaughter, Brianna Alicia Perkins of Plano; brother W. E. Ary and wife, Kay of Houston, and Coy J. West of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.Graveside services were Aug. 31, 2002, at the Mission Burial Park North in San Antonio.
