Lady Indians back in chase

Thursday, March 10, 2005

If it seems that the Couch Lady Indians like wearing the crown of district champions, that would make sense, as the Lady Indians have refused to let go of the title since the dawn of the new millennium.

Time to make room for one more in the trophy case, as the Lady Indians brought home this year's Class 1 District 3 plaque with a 59-36 win over Bradleyville in Eminence March 5.

The win placed Couch in this week's state sectionals at Cabool High School, where the Lady Indians looked to move on to the quarterfinals this season after suffering losses in the last two opening rounds of the state playoffs.

Couch broke open a 9-all game after the first period with Bradleyville by outscoring their opponents 18-9 in the second period to grab a 27-18 halftime lead.

Finishing things off with a 21-7 burst in the fourth period, the Lady Indians posted a 23-point win over Bradleyville to claim the district crown.

Caitlyn Melton and Kim LaBahn tossed in 14 points apiece to lead the Lady Indians. Sandy LaBahn followed with 10, and Traci Murdock added eight. Tonya Combs had six and Kassi Burr three. Kandi York and Ashley Hale tallied two points each for the district champion Lady Indians.

The Couch Indians' season came to a close March 3 in the second round of the Class 1 District 3 Tournament at Eminence High School with a 52-28 loss to the homestanding Redwings.

A close affair early, with Couch trailing 7-6 after the first period, the Redwings outpaced Couch 14-5 in the second period to go on top 21-11 at the half.

Kevin Price tallied 15 points to lead the Indians, while Adam Combs followed with nine. EZ Dahlke posted three, and B.J. Sorrell one for Couch.
