Team captains to meet

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

THAYER -- The Relay for Life team captain's meeting will be May 8, at 6 p.m. at the Thayer High School Football Field. Relay officials said this will be a planning meeting for Oregon County Relay for Life that is planned for May 16.

A special luminary ceremony during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Oregon County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived.

The luminary candle lighting to represent these individuals is May 16 at 9 p.m. at the Thayer High School Football Field.

Anyone wanting to purchase a luminary can do so by contacting Janet Smoot at 870-625-3953. Each luminary is $5.

"It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the track," Smoot, luminary co-chair said. "We hope to sell enough to light the entire area."

Relay for Life is a fun-filled, overnight event. Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation.

Relay for Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches and people from all walks of life.

According to Debbie Strain, a Relay coordinator, teams seek sponsors prior to the Relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer.

Oregon County Relay for Life will kick-off at 7 p.m. with the official survivors' lap and then the rest of the participants will join in the fun.

Strain said this is a tobacco free event. She said no pets will be allowed and all children should be accompanied by an adult.
