Melvin Tanner, 73, of Salem, Ark., son of the late Floyd and Eva Hickman Tanner was born Sept. 19, 1930, in Elizabeth, Ark. He died April 10, 2004, at his home in Salem.
He married Luella French Jackson Sept. 19, 1992 at Salem. He retired from the United States Army having served during the Korean War and Vietnam War. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Baptist Church and attended services at Salem First Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Luella, of the family home; his children -- Robert Tanner of Joplin, Mo., and Valrie Merriman and husband, Jim, of Knoxville, Tenn.; stepchildren -- Sandra Cooper and husband, James, of Melbourne, and Debora Gean Amos of West Plains, Mo.; a brother, Marcell Tanner of Oxford; sisters -- Nadine Cochran of Mountain Home, and Modine Singleton and Novellene Wray, both of Salem; six grandchildren -- Mickey, Micah, Shawn and Christina Amos, Nathan Champ and wife, Amanda, and Justin Champ and wife, Jennifer; five great-grandchildren -- Lexis and Lucas Champ and Zachary, Shadow and Deryel Amos.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral was April 13 at Salem First Baptist Church. Burial with Military Honors was at Union Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
