The home of Bob and Jan Murphy of Cherokee Village will be one of the homes featured this year in the annual tour of homes sponsored by the Hardy Timely Club and the Hardy Garden Club. The Murphy's home is located on Lake Thunderbird at 117 Iroquois Drive.
The McCabe family, who built three other homes in Cherokee Village during the same time period, built the home in 1971. All of the McCabe homes are unique in style and structure. The Murphy home is a staggered tri-level consisting of about 3,500 square feet. The hexagon shaped house has an unattached open garage, which is also hexagon in shape. Constructed of cypress and redwood, the home has a wraparound deck that extends out 25 feet on the lakeside.
Bob purchased the house in 1978 from the McCabe's son. Bob and Jan have made few changes to their home. The carpet has been replaced and some hardwood floors installed. A 10-foot wide native stone fireplace is located in the sunken living room and extends down to the full basement. There are two spiral staircases, with the larger one placed in the center of the home extending 15 steps from the open living and dining area to the lookout on top of the house. There are three bedrooms with three baths.
Jan's collection of over 300 Santas will be featured during the tour, along with her nativity collection. Also, the Murphys have three, 7-foot tall glass cabinets filled with a collection of crystal, silver, glassware and items collected from travels and special events involving the family.
The staff of The Interior will assist Bob and Jan, who are owners of The Interior in Ash Flat, in decorating for the tour. Several themes of color and design will be expressed in the holiday displays.
The Murphys, who hope to build a new home in the near future, wanted to open their home for tour during the holidays for those who have been curious about the "round house." Also, Jan, being a member of both the Timely Club and the Garden Club, is involved in the tour each year with decorating many of the homes and decorating at Fountain Place where refreshments are served.
This year's tour "A Village Christmas" will be Dec. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased from Four Seasons in Cherokee Village, The Dulcimer Shop in Hardy, and The Interior in Ash Flat. Refreshments will be served at Fountain Place in the Village. There will be no shuttle service this year.
