Oregon County to vote on representative, Amendment 3

Thursday, October 28, 2004

Staff Writer

OREGON COUNTY -- All the local races in Oregon County that will appear on the Nov. 3 election ballot are uncontested.

One district race of interest that involves Oregon County voters is the District 153 state representative race. Incumbent Mike Dethrow of Alton will face former state Rep. Gene Oakley from Van Buren. Dethrow is running as a Republican and Oakley runs as a Democrat.

The only issue on the Nov. 3 ballot is Constitutional Amendment 3 that deals with revenue from motor vehicle sales tax.

A yes vote on the amendment will amend the Constitution to require all revenues from the existing motor vehicle fuel tax (less collection costs) to be used for constructing, reconstructing, maintaining and repairing state and local highways and bridges. It will also require that all proceeds from vehicle taxes and fees paid by highway users be used for constructing and maintaining the state highway system, except up to half of the vehicle taxes and fees, phased in over four years, will go into a state road bond fund to repay state highway bonds.

A no vote will not amend the Missouri Constitution in the manner described above.

The amendment will have no impact on taxes.
