Trimmer or Tremor

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

OK, I really messed up! I didn't write the article but I did proof it, as did two other people, and we all missed it -- several times. To clarify, trimmers is something that cuts weeds and tremor is something you feel from an earthquake.

I know people are reading our newspaper(s) because several of them have taken the time to call or e-mail me to tell me about the mistake -- and I thank everyone -- honestly, I do.

In my own defense, I want to say we (the news department) put together a total of 70 news pages on Monday and Tuesday of last week. The earthquake story was a last minute addition and was proofed while we were proofing the 70 pages. I guess I could blame it on the spell checker for not giving me the correct word definition but the computer program is as dumb as I feel at times.

I make mistakes every week. Sometimes it's grammar, sometimes it's punctuation, sometimes it's word definition and sometimes it's all three. Thankfully, a newspaper is not an English textbook but it should be as mistake free as possible.

I apologize to everyone who caught the mistakes and for those who didn't see anything wrong with the article -- you are now in the same "duh" boat as the rest of us -- welcome aboard.
