Last day of school set for May 24

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

MAMMOTH SPRING -- The Mammoth Spring School Board met in regular session April 16 at the school.

The board usually meets the second Monday of the month but due to spring break at the school, the meeting was rescheduled to April 16.

Board members heard a presentation by three National Board Certified teachers at the school. They are Lana Steed, Anita Humphrey and Paula Baldridge. The teacher's presentation included the course work involved in becoming National Board Certified. They requested that teachers in the district who have achieved National Board Certification receive extra pay and told the board the pay raise might encourage other teachers to seek National Board Certification.

The board took no action on the request.

The school board voted to amend the 2006-07 school calendar. The school district did not use all the snow days allowed and because of that the last day of school will be May 24 instead of May 25.

The board also voted to adopt the school calendar for the 2007-08 school year. Classes will start Aug. 20 in the Mammoth Spring School District and end May 23.

The board discussed the possibility of a new science program in the elementary school. Superintendent Ron Taylor said this would involve hiring a teacher certified in teaching science in grades five through eight. "My idea is to purchase a mobile science lab that can be moved from classroom to classroom. I'll call the lab a push-in program where the teacher actually brings the lab to the students," Taylor said.

He told board members the science program in the elementary school needs to be beefed-up.

The board voted to re-assign second grade teacher Paula Baldridge for the upcoming school year. Baldridge will teach one-half day of computer lab in the elementary school and one-half day remediation with students who didn't score well on standardized tests.

The school board approved a request by high school principal Brian Davis that ACT classes be held at the high school during the month of June. The classes will focus on math and literature and the final ACT test will be given July 1.

Davis also addressed the board concerning a drivers education class being held at the school during the summer. The board voted to accept his request and hired Denny Young as the driving instructor.

With the retirement this year of high school librarian Jo Kay Smith, the board voted to combine the elementary and high school librarian position. Elementary librarian Sandy Russell will assume this position.

The board voted to renew the contracts of all classified personnel at the school.
