Salem lost 42-7 in the first round of the state AA playoffs. The Greyhounds ran up against an unbelievable number 3 team, one that would rival many number 1 seeds for the playoffs.The Greyhounds hosted the first round of the Class AA state playoffs against the Eagles from Des Arc.Salem came into the game with an overall record of 7-3, while Des Arc came in sporting a 7-2 record.The Greyhounds won the toss, but elected to defer their choice until the second half.Des Arc took the opening kickoff and promptly marched 62 yards in 10 plays, taking an early 7-0 lead with 7:55 still left on the clock in the first quarter.Salem looked to set the tone early, and they did.A turnover on fourth down gave the Eagles a gift, the ball at the Salem 6-yard line.Des Arc needed only one play to score, putting the Greyhounds in a 14-0 hole early.The Greyhounds started their second possession on their own 25 and went to work.Two penalties on the Eagles gave the Greyhounds a first down at their own 35.David Bryant picked up five yards on two carries, but an offside on Des Arc moved Salem into a 3rd-and-inches. Jamie Sisk bulled ahead for 6 yards, giving the Greyhounds a first down on the Eagles side of the 50.Bryant and Sisk banged ahead, setting up a fourth-and-two, and the Greyhounds decided they needed to go for it. Bryant kicked out to the left side and shifted gears, ripping up serious yardage.Bryant was brought down at the 5-yard line, giving the Greyhounds a 1st-and-goal.On second and goal, Bryant smashed through for a touchdown with 1:43 left in the first. The PAT was tacked on, and Salem trailed 14-7.The Greyhounds were pumped up after the touchdown, with only one big play separating the teams on the scoreboard.The one big play turned the other way when Des Arc took the ensuing kickoff and went the full distance, scoring a touchdown. The extra point was tacked on, and the Eagles were flying high with a 21-7 lead.The Greyhounds got their next crack at the ball starting at their own 36.Salem couldn't establish anything solid and was forced to punt the ball back over after seven plays.Des Arc set the tone early, and needed only three plays to cover 63 yards, giving the Eagles a 28-7 lead with 9:39 left in the first half.The Eagles would capitalize on another Salem turnover, scoring a touchdown with only two plays, going up 35-7 with 17.8 seconds to go before half.The Greyhounds got the ball to start the second half, but couldn't do anything with it, going 4-and-out.Des Arc put the final nail in the Greyhounds' coffin with a four-play, 66-yard drive, taking a 42-7 lead with 8:32 to go in the third quarter.Both teams traded out kicks, with neither team scoring anymore. Salem ends their season with a record of 10-4.
