Gladys Dora Whitten, 96, of Cherokee Village, Ark., died July 20, 2004, at her residence.
Born Jan. 12, 1908, in Stonewall County, Texas, she was the daughter of Marian Clay Waltrip and Ada Alice Littleton Waltrip. She worked in the civil service during World War II at the Naval Station in Corpus Christi, Texas.
She later moved to San Marcos, Texas, where she owned and operated the Flour Bluff Beauty Shop.
She moved to Cherokee Village over three years ago from San Marcos. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two daughters -- Dorothy L. Jones of Cherokee Village and Jonell Hart of San Marcos; two sons -- Lankford C. Sneed of Dallas, Texas, and Jimmy L. Stevens of San Marcos; a sister, Coleen Abernathy of Dunnellon, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren - eight great-great-grandchildren; and her longtime loving pet cat, Tim,
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, R.B. Whitten.
The funeral was July 23 at Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel with Buddy Hines officiating. Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery at Highland with arrangements under the direction of Tri-County's Cherokee Chapel Funeral Services Inc., of Highland.
Pallbearers included Rick Morris, Donnie Smith, David Smith, James Hooks, Sr., Shawn Hooks and James Hooks Jr.
