Lady Longhorns beaten at buzzer

NORFORK -- The Longhorns headed into Norfork to take on the Panthers and split on the varsity level. In the senior girls contest, the Lady Longhorns drew first blood when Brandi Shrable got the inside feed and hit the short turnaround jumper. But the Lady Panthers ran off 6 unanswered points to take a 6-2 lead. Viola closed to within 2 points when Kylee Shrable hit the jumper off the right wing, but Norfork ran off 6 more points before the Lady Longhorns could tally any more points. Mysti Sanders hit a long range shot for 3 points at the buzzer, getting Viola back to within 5 points at the end of the first quarter. True to form, the Lady Panthers hit another run before the Lady Longhorns could get going. This time, Norfork ripped off 8 points to race out to a 20-7 lead. Brandi Shrable hit a short turnaround from the right baseline, the first points of the second quarter, at the 4:49 mark. She came right back to hit one of two free throws to cut the deficit in half, but Norfork reeled off 4 more points to take a 24-10 lead. Shrable came back with 2-of-2 free throws, but Norfork kept the pressure on, scoring 3 of their own to take a sizable lead. Viola outscored the Lady Panthers 4-3 to close the half, with Kylee Shrable providing the points with a pullup jumper off the left baseline, and a jumper from the right wing. At the half, Viola was down 30-16. Viola came out of the locker room looking like a different team, hitting 10 unanswered points to get back into the ballgame. Brandi Shrable got things started with a short jumper, then Hannah Benton hit the net for a deuce, Shrable stuck back a rebound, then Ashley Jones pulled off the rare 4 point play. Jones drained a trey out of the right corner and then went to the line and sank the charity toss for getting fouled on the shot. Norfork broke the run with a deuce of their own, but Brandi Shrable hit a jumper from the free throw line, and Kylee Shrable hit one of two free throws to get Viola to within 4 points at 29-33. Norfork nailed a trey to push their lead up to 7 points, but the Lady Longhorns weren't done. Nicki Batterton stole the ball and stuck it back up and in, then Jones hit a 15 footer out of the left corner to pull the Lady Longhorns to within 3 points at 33-36. The Lady Longhorns pulled to within one when Jones hit a couple of free throws, but Norfork hit both ends of the 1-and-1 to keep the lead.Jones knotted the game at 38-all with a long-range trey with 4:32 to go in the game, then Benton gave the Lady Longhorns the lead with a couple of charity tosses at the 4:01 mark.Norfork came back to take a 42-40 lead, but the Lady Longhorns tied things up again when Benton hit both free throws after getting hacked.Norfork hit a bucket to retake the lead with just over two minutes left. Viola retook the lead when Benton hit a free throw, then Brandi Shrable stuck back a rebound with 14.7 seconds to go. The Lady Longhorns watched the game get away when Norfork hit two free throws with no time left on the clock to take the win away.For the Lady Longhorns, Brandi Shrable led the way with 15 points, Jones (11), Kylee Shrable (7), Benton (7), Sanders (3), and Batterton (2).
