Irgens leads Cougars over Greyhounds

Thursday, December 13, 2001

zard County Consolidated used a super game from Shane Irgens to claim victory for the Cougars against the Salem Greyhounds last week. Irgens tallied 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the ICC Cougars to a 56-48 win. ICC opened the game on the charity line where Shane Irgens nailed a couple of free throws to start the scoring, but Salem countered with Justin Howell hitting on the spin move on the right baseline to knot things back up. The Cougars had a 7-6 lead when Irgens hit a free throw then converted the traditional 3-point play to extend the Cougars lead on out to 11-6. The Greyhounds and Cougars would add one more bucket each to their total to end the first quarter at 13-8 in favor of the Cougars. The Greyhounds cut into the lead first thing out of the gate in the second quarter, but ICC's Joe Hawkins got fired up and hit a driving layup and then a couple of free throws. Josh Dockins drained a jumper off the free throw line, giving ICC a 19-10 lead. Salem came back with a short run of their own, with Leon Harvey hitting a couple of buckets sandwiched around a free throw by Garrett Kissinger, slicing the ICC lead down to 4 points. After the teams traded out a couple of scores each, ICC hit for a 6-1 run to finish the half to take a 29-20 lead at the break. The third quarter was almost a stalemate, with each team scoring right after the other. Salem lost a little ground, and headed into the final stanza trailing by 6 points. The Cougars bounced out with 6 unanswered points to take a 43-31 lead, but the Greyhounds got a free throw from Rusty Perkins and a duece from Kissinger to get the deficit back to single digits. It was cat-and-mouse the rest of the way, with the lead staying around 9 points for ICC, and the Cougars ended the game with a 56-48 win. Leading scorers were Shane Irgens from ICC with 25 points, and Leon Harvey for the Greyhounds with 11 points.
