Area teams compete in NEA Tournament

The 25th annual Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament fired up Dec. 20 at Arkansas State University's Convocation Center in Jonesboro.

Tournament play in the NEA tourney gives area teams a chance to adjust their level of competition around the holiday break before returning to conference action at the first of the year.

Girls Dec. 20A-AA BracketWalnut Ridge, 40ICC, 37

The Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats held off a feisty Lady Cougar squad from ICC, 40-37.Alyce Bailey led ICC with 8 points.Walnut Ridge was paced by Anna Johnson with 18 and Sarah Penn with 14.

AAA BracketCave City, 65Harrisburg, 30

Deanna Polston came out smoking for the Cavewomen of Cave City as they blasted Harrisburg by 35 points, 65-30.The Cavewomen jumped out to an early lead and did not relent.Polston ended the contest with 24 points.Kayla Barr chipped in 18, and Brookly Landers added 11 for Cave City.

Shane Irgens led a trio of double-figure scorers as the ICC Cougars pounded the Sloan-Hendrix Greyhounds, 66-37.Irgens tallied 27 for ICC, followed by Allen Roberts with 16 and Rex Burrow with 11.Sloan-Hendrix got 12 points from Matt Wilson and 8 from Jason Pitcher.

Girls Dec. 21A-AA BracketSalem, 58Lynn, 46

The Lady Greyhounds of Salem outlasted the Lynn Lady Tigers, 58-46, in opening round action.Andrea Bales (15), Jennifer Innis (14) and Jodi McCollom were all big contributors for the Lady Greyhounds.The Lady Tigers were paced by Shana Richmond and Amanda Kent with 12 points apiece.

Boys Dec. 21A-AA BracketArmorel, 45ICC, 43

The ICC Cougars were dealt a 45-43 tournament exit at the hands of the Armorel Tigers.After scoring 27 in the victory over Sloan-Hendrix, Shane Irgens was held to 14 by the Armorel defense.Rex Burrow added 12 for ICC.The Tigers were led by Antonio Fowlkes with 17 and Michael Lewis with 15.Bay, 61Salem, 52

The Bay Yellowjackets fought back from a halftime deficit to knock off the Salem Greyhounds 61-52.A big game from Greyhound Jamie Sisk was not enough to stave off the Yellowjackets. Sisk scored 17 for Salem.Ryan Prince led Bay with 17.Byron Forehand and Cameron Campbell added 12 each for the Yellowjackets.

Girls Dec. 22A-AA BracketMarmaduke, 61Salem, 33

The Lady Greyhounds of Salem were outdueled 61-33 in second round action by Marmaduke.Heather Bales led the Salem cause with 15 points.Brooke Grigsby notched 15 for top-seeded Marmaduke.

Boys Dec. 22AAA BracketEast Poinsett County, 82Highland, 63

The EPC Warriors rolled to an easy 82-63 win over the Highland Rebels in a first round matchup.

Despite big games from Chuck Rees with 26 and Tim Hansen with 13, the Rebels could not stop the Warriors' swarm.EPC was led by Marcus Monk's 27 and Courtney Brown's 26 points.
