Archie John Hatman, 84, son of the late Edmon Hatman and Manda Charlton Hat-man was born Aug. 7, 1917 in Camp, Ark., and died Nov. 22, 2001 in West Plains, Mo. He was married December 28, 1945 in Memphis, Tenn. to Vera Kenney. He attended school in Koshkonong, Mo., after which he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and the Untied States Forestry Service in Grass Valley, Calif. He enlisted in 1941 in the U.S. Army and was in the 40th Engineer Combat Regiment in the European Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Ribbon, the American Defense Service Ribbon and was given a field commission to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in Feb. 1945, and served in the United States Army Reserves until 1965 becoming Captain before his discharge. While serving in England, he met his wife, Vera Kenney Hatman who was a member of the U. S. Army Nurse Corps and enjoyed 56 years of marriage.He was employed by Frisco Burlington Northern Railroad as brakeman and conductor for 42 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Saint Paul Methodist Church in Thayer, the American Legion Charles Burkett Post #344 in Thayer, and was a former board member of the Oregon County Health Department and the Thayer Housing Commission.Survivors include his wife, Vera of the home in Thayer, Mo.; four children, Glenda Hatman Lewis of Little Rock, Ark., Paulette Hatman of Ava, Mo., Patricia Hatman Krum-wiede and husband, Vernon of Jefferson City, Mo., and Donald Hatman and wife, Cindy of Thayer; three grandchildren, Christie Hatman of Thayer, Jared Hatman of West Plains, and Kristen Madsen of Fayetteville, Ark.; five great-grandchildren, Eli, Noelle, Isaiah, Gracie and Aaron; two sisters, Lorene Adams of Thayer, and Nadine Brazeal of Springfield, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenny Hatman; two sisters, Ruby Siverly and Ann Clarke; and two brothers, Ray and Paul Hatman.Services were Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in Thayer with Dr. Jack Martin and Rev. Ron Richardson officiating. Burial was in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc. of Thayer, Mo.Military rites were conducted by John T. Kirk VFW Post 1828, Wayne T. Boles American Legion Post 23, Bakersfield American Legion Post 374, and American Veterans Post 98.Pallbearers were Jared Hatman, Jerry Adams, John Coleman, Archie Adams, Jerry Kuykendall, and Allen Deckard.
