Born 2-22-1942 -- Died 6-25-2004

Gary Edward Yarber, 62, son of Herman and Vivian Smith Yarber was born Feb. 22, 1942, near Warm Springs, Ark., and died June 25, in Doniphan, Mo. He was a member of Doniphan Church of Christ for many years. He was superintendent of Thayer School during the late 1970s.

He touched many lives in his 32 years as an educator in public schools. He took a special interest in his students and quietly bought many class rings, shoes, suits, and school jackets for students over the years. He spent the last 16 years of his career as superintendent of Fair Grove Schools, retiring in 1995.

He loved talking to people and was well-known for his humorous stories. He felt especially close to the staff at Fair Grove schools and to the people in the Fair Grove Community, as well as his special coffee shop buddies and many friends at Doniphan. He will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of all of the people whose lives he touched, but his presence here with us will always be missed.

Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Mary; his mother, Vivian; and six children -- Cheryl Starr and husband Jacob Fercho, Robin and husband, Terry Moody, Claudia Deigado, Bubba Shaw and wife, Angie, Sarah and husband, Tom Habiger, and Laura and husband, Mike. Other survivors are his father-in-law Hanford England; 13 grandchildren, who were the joy of his life; one sister, Ann Peters and husband, Pete and their son, Keith and family; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Cheryl Starr and Robin's mother, Paula Yarber, also survive him.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Herman; very dear grandparents, Walter and Pearl Smith; and his mother-in-law, June England.

The funeral was June 30 at the Fair Grove High School gymnasium with burial services at Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield, Mo.

Contributions may be made to the Gary E. Yarber Scholarship Award in lieu of flowers, if desired.
