E. Newman Whitten, 89, of Alton, Mo., was born June 25, 1912 in Alton, Mo., and died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001 at the Reynolds County Memorial Hospital.He was a member of 739 Co. CCC Camp Cuivre River, Troy, Mo., and was also stationed at Camp Five in the Irish Wilderness and New Madrid, Mo., and served as a clerk for Franks Hardware and Alton Hardware for 36 years and was a long time trustee. He sang with a local quartet at numerous funerals was a member and treasurer of the Alton School Board, and was a fifty-year member of the local Masonic Lodge, holding various offices. In later years, he was active in the Senior Citizens Center in Alton, serving on the board of directors for many years as treasurer. He was very instrumental in helping to acquire the funding and helped oversee the construction of the present building.Survivors include three sons, Larry Whitten and wife, Joyce of Van Buren, Mo., Lynn Whitten and wife Jody of Dixon, Mo., and Timothy Whitten of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, William H. and Rosa May (Stogsdill) Whitten; his wife, Tressia (Smith) Whitten; two brothers, and three sisters.Services were Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001 at 11 a.m. at the Clary Chapel with Bro. Bob Frey officiating. Burial was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton, Mo.
