Village elects new mayor

Friday, November 29, 2002

Cherokee Village voters selected a new mayor Nov. 26. Street Superintendent Ray Maynard, who emphasized the need to cooperate with the Suburban Improvement District, defeated incumbent Mayor Marjorie Rogers.

Maynard received 985 votes (59 percent), Rogers 687 (41 percent). Although the vote was close in Fulton County where Rogers lives (Maynard 150, Rogers 144), Maynard carried the more populated Sharp County by a wide margin (835 to 543).

Maynard said, "It's been kind of a divisive race, but I'm looking forward to the folks in Cherokee Village putting aside their differences. I'm looking forward to taking the reins and working with the people to make us proud of the Village." He said he wants to organize town meetings to gather input from citizens.

"We'll probably be making a few changes here and there," he said. "We're going to take it one step at a time."

Also in Tuesday's runoff elections, independent candidate Darrell Kehrli received 498 votes (67 percent) to defeat Republican Dick Sackett (247 votes, 33 percent) for justice of the peace in District 2 in Cherokee Village. Kehrli and Sackett had received 314 votes apiece in a four-man race in the general election Nov. 5.

Kehrli said, "I'm honored and humbled that the people would turn out and support me. I will do my best to be a good representative for the people of Sharp County."

Hardy residents voted to return Alderman Bobby Higginbottom to the city council. Higginbottom garnered 125 votes (58 percent) to defeat his opponent, Jack Huffmaster Jr., who received 91 votes (42 percent). Higginbottom had filed suit in circuit court challenging Huffmaster's eligibility to run, claiming the challenger doesn't live in the ward he was seeking to represent.

Hardy Mayor Louie Seibert said, "He clearly does not live in the the ward." The mayor said the city council is expected to pass an ordinance at its next meeting defining the ward boundaries precisely.
