James W. Helvering, 86, of Bradford, Ark., died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Searcy, Ark. He was born Aug. 12, 1921, at Bradford, Ark., the son of William Howard and Ina Irene (Black) Helvering.
He was a 1938 graduate of Bradford High School. Helvering was a Millwright for over 24 years for Fred Beaman Lumber Company and also farmed. He was a 32-degree Mason of Scottish Rite, entering the Masons in?March 1943. He was recipient of the Pillars of Solomon Award for outstanding service to his lodge and was also a Shriner.
Helvering was a member of the Arkansas Cattlemen's Association, enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports and traveling.
He is survived by: his wife, Ethel Lee (Foust) Helvering of Bradford; five sons, James Leland Helvering of Boliver, Tenn., William Harold Helvering of Williamsville, Mo., John Milford Helvering of Memphis, Tenn., Donald David Helvering of Benton, Ark., and Robert Ridley Helvering of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Patricia Ann Graham of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Margaret Brindley of Mammoth Spring, Ark.; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; four brothers; four sisters; and one grandson, William Howard Helvering.
Pallbearers were his grandsons: Jack ?Helvering, Shane Helvering, David A. Helvering, Eric, ?Helvering, Doug Helvering, Neil Boyce, Burt Boyce, John David Chitwood, Terry Pratt, David W. Helvering and Dan Helvering.
Funeral services were held Aug. 28 at Possum Grape Church of Christ. Interment followed in Heard Cemetery located west of Bradford, Ark. Arrangements were under the direction of Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
