Two accident victims were transported to Eastern Ozarks Regional Health System in Cherokee Village for injuries they received in a one-vehicle rollover 1.9 miles west of Ash Flat Aug. 8.
Deputy Stanley Haney said Rosemarie Grassi, 62, of Horseshoe Bend was driving a 2001 Nissan pickup truck east on Peace Valley Road when she lost control of her vehicle attempting to negotiate a curve.
Grassi's vehicle ran off the road on the right side, traveled approximately 93 feet and struck three trees before coming to rest on the driver's side, Haney said. Grassi and a passenger, Nicol Bongioino, 12, of Columbus, Ohio, were trapped in the overturned vehicle.
Rescue workers from the Ash Flat Fire Department and first responders used the Jaws of Life to extricate the pair. Officers from the Sharp County Sheriff's Office and the Ash Flat Police Department helped with rescue efforts.
Grassi was transferred by helicopter to St. John's Regional Health Center but was discharged Aug. 10.
Bongioino was transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock and was discharged Aug. 11.
Bob Booth of Spring River Parmedic Ambulance Service said, "These young ladies are very, very lucky."
