Sex offender faces new molestation charges

Thursday, October 14, 2004

Staff Writer

An Izard County man who had already been convicted of sexually abusing two children in Sharp County in 1996 was charged Oct. 4 with raping an 8-year-old girl in Independence County.

Darry G. Reppond, 63, of Wideman, has been charged with one count of rape, a class Y felony.

Independence County investigator Lt. Brenda Brittle said Reppond admitted that he assaulted the girl Oct. 2.

According to investigators, Reppond said he knew what he did was wrong but he didn't want to admit that he was guilty. The arrest report said Reppond told investigators "he only did what he did because he loved her."

Officials at the Independence County Sherriff's Department said Reppond was staying the weekend with his son when the alleged rape occurred.

Reppond knew the victim prior to the incident, but the two were not related.

Reppond was convicted of sexually abusing two children in Sharp County in 1996. Cpt. Bill Lindsey with the Independence Sheriff's Department said Reppond told investigators he is facing similar charges in another county.

Reppond's bond has been set at $250,000.

He will be formally arraigned in Independence County Circuit Court in November.

If convicted, Reppond could face life in prison.
